The long process of balancing Bedford County’s budget is about to start again.
The Board of Supervisors will hold the first of a dozen meetings on the upcoming fiscal year 2008-09 budget tonight at 5 p.m. at the county administration building at 122 East Main St.
The public meetings will run from today until April 12, when the board is expected to adopt the budget, set a new tax rate, adopt a capital improvement plan for the next five years and set a new nursing home daily rate.
The board is expected to begin advertising the official budget, the new rates and the capital plan after March 23. A public hearing on the new budget and the new rates will be held April 7th.
Supervisors received their budget workbooks at the end of January.
Last year, they approved the current budget of more than $160 million and set a 51-cent tax rate per $100 of assessed property value. The school fund was the biggest county expense, at more than $99 million.
Chairman Steve Arrington said recently that despite growing county needs, he would fight to keep taxes as low as possible. He and two other supervisors voted last year against the 51-cent rate, saying it should be lowered.
