The town of Brookneal has received a $1 million grant to help revitalize its downtown.
The grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development will be used to improve the appearance of homes and businesses downtown and to promote the downtown area.
The Region 2000 Local Government Council staff submitted the grant for the town in March 2007. The town received official notice of the grant last week.
“We are excited to be able to move forward with this project,” said Scott Smith, a regional development specialist with the Local Government Council.
Smith, who will act as manager of the project, said much of the grant will be used for façade improvements downtown.
Other projects will repair sidewalks and market the downtown area with signs along U.S. 501, he said.
Most of the projects will be completed over the next two years.
The town has several other grants to improve housing and waterlines, Smith said. The town’s commitment to revitalization was key in receiving the grant, he said.
“The show of support was very impressive in making the decision as to which town would receive the money,” Brookneal Mayor Phyllis Campbell said in a news release. “I’m looking forward to working on this project and applying for future grants that will complete the goals we have in mind for the town.”
