The Lynchburg City Schools budget will again be the topic of discussion during today’s school board meeting.
Beverly Padgett, chief financial officer, will provide additional information on anticipated revenue and expenditures in the 2008-2009 operating budget.
Board members are also expected to discuss the appointment of former Lynchburg City Schools employee John Lange to coordinate the 2008 triennial school census.
According to the board’s agenda, Virginia law states school divisions must conduct a school census every three years. Divisions must collect information on people ages 5 to 19. The 2008 census must be done between Jan. 1 and July 15.
Also on today’s agenda is action by board members to seek a waiver from the Virginia Department of Education to start school before Labor Day.
To begin school early, a locality must get permission and define “good cause.” LCS plans to seek a waiver because the division has been closed an average of eight days in five of the past 10 years due to inclement weather.
Superintendent Paul McKendrick is also expected to take a few moments to recognize the dedication of board members because February is School Board Appreciation Month as designated by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.
