A Campbell County man was in critical condition Thursday night after an afternoon wreck in Rustburg.
According to Trooper G.G. McMurray with the Virginia State Police, Richard Raikes, 67, of Rustburg, may have had a medical condition that caused him to wreck his moped at the intersection of U.S. 501 and Virginia 24 in Rustburg.
McMurray said Raikes was headed east when he stopped at the traffic light at the intersection about 4:30 p.m.
A witness to the wreck told McMurray that when the light turned green, the mo-ped started wobbling, ran onto the sidewalk and hit a sign.
Raikes was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital in critical condition but McMurray didn’t know whether that was related to the wreck, or if a medical condition was to blame.
“Something happened prior to him wrecking, but I don’t know (what it was),” McMurray said.
