Two accidents in Campbell County slowed down traffic on U.S. 460 near Greenview Drive on Saturday evening, according to Virginia State Police.
Trooper A.M. Shupe said the first accident, at about 6:25 p.m., happened because a driver tried to use a turnaround reserved for authorized vehicles.
Shupe said Lawrence Johnson, of Roanoke, was driving his Chrysler minivan in the right lane of U.S. 460, and abruptly switched lanes, hoping to make a left-hand turnaround.
A Toyota two-door car rear-ended the minivan, sending it into the median, where it overturned.
The Toyota was then clipped from behind by a Chevrolet pickup.
Shupe said the Chrysler was totaled and the Toyota suffered heavy damage, but the Chevrolet sustained only minor damage.
Johnson and his passenger were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with minor injuries. Johnson was charged with reckless driving, according to Shupe.
The second accident, according to Trooper B.L. Crews, happened at 7 p.m. while traffic was slowed down for the other accident.
Crews said a minor, driving a Buick sedan tried to change lanes, and in the process clipped a Nissan Quest minivan.
Neither of the vehicles sustained major damage, and no one was injured, Crews said. The sedan’s driver was charged with making an unsafe lane change.
