An Amherst County car crash, which resulted in a downed utility pole, backs up traffic on U.S. 29, according to the Virginia State Police.
The accident occurred in front of the Thomas Motor Inn around 2:16 p.m., said D.T. Wilson of the state police. Clara Anderson of Goode was trying to turn into the inn and struck William Harris of Monroe, Wilson said.
Harris’ vehicle then ran into a utility pole, which Wilson said suffered an electrical explosion and eventually fell, closing down both southbound lanes. Only a single northbound lane was open, while cars heading south had to be rerouted.
No one was injured.
Anderson was charged with failure to yield the right of way, said Wilson. The Amherst and Monelison Fire departments were still tending to the pole’s cleanup at 5 p.m. Sunday.
