Some area beef farmers may be eligible to apply for grants intended to increase the value of their herds.
Farmers in most area counties have been eligible before, but this is the first time beef cattle producers in Bedford County can apply, Campbell County director of economic development Mike Davidson said in a news release.
The grants, which ultimately come from the tobacco commission, are a 50/50 cost share up to $3,000. The money is for improvements to cattle handling facilities or genetics that will increase the herd’s value.
Since Bedford County is new to the program in Central Virginia, up to 38 farmers in that locality can get grants. Five farmers each in Campbell, Appomattox, Buckingham and Cumberland counties may receive grants. Those who have received grants before are not eligible for an additional round.
• An informational meeting will be held in Bedford County at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Bedford County Administration Building.
• An informational meeting in Campbell County will be at 7 p.m. Feb 21 in the Virginia Co-op Extension office conference room.
