Posters go up at the Lynchburg Humane Society for the Fix for 5, a $5.00 spay and neuter program, just for pit bulls.

“So many people are having money troubles. The economy’s not great so we thought this would be a good time to offer this kind of help to people,“ said Sandra Boydston, Development Director for the Lynchburg Humane Society.

So on March 12, 25 pet owners can get their dogs fixed at a deep discount, thanks to grant money.  Shelter workers hope it will keep pit bull puppies from becoming homeless.

“People are nervous about adopting them. They don’t know for sure whether or not the pit bull they get might have been one that was involved in dog fighting and they’re nervous about the breed,“ said Boydston.

Lynchburg’s animal control officer tells us the biggest problem he sees is pit bulls attacking other animals.  You may remember in September we told you about two pit bulls who killed a goat and a pony in Lynchburg.  Both dogs were put down.  Boydston believes getting pit bulls fixed is part of the solution.

“Animals are better once they’ve been spayed or neutered. They are not as aggressive and they don’t roam and they make calmer better pets,“ she said.

The Fix for 5 is filling up fast with only 10 spots left.  The five dollars includes a rabies shot. Contact the Lynchburg Humane Society for more information.
