After the crowd disappeared from Monday’s dedication ceremony in honor of fallen Campbell County deputy Jason Saunders, his mother, Peggy Saunders, shared a moment with her son’s best friend, Altavista Police Officer and Fire Captain, J.B. Layne.
A memorial garden, along with a bridge named after Saunders, was dedicated at the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department in Rustburg on Monday. Layne grew up with Saunders, going to school with him and serving on the fire department together. Saunders was killed in a car wreck while traveling to provide backup during a police chase.
