Virginia State Police investigators are looking for people who may have been victimized by a man they say was practicing medicine in Lynchburg without a license.

Peter Adeniji-Bello, 60, of Irvington Springs Road was indicted in February on five counts of practicing without a license, four counts of sexual battery, and four counts of obtaining money or property by false pretense.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Doucette said Adeniji-Bello is accused of meeting with a local woman to sell her an unknown liquid to treat her cancer.

The physical examinations from which the sexual battery charges stem and other meetings took place in Lynchburg inside vehicles, Doucette said.

He doesn’t know of any other victims at this time.

“The only allegations we know of took place in the later part of 2007,” Doucette said.

Court records show the alleged meetings took place from July 20 until Oct. 4.

Doucette said the woman reported the man when her symptoms did not improve.

Adeniji-Bello was returned to Lynchburg this week after being extradited from New York, the prosecutor said. He is currently jailed in the Lynchburg Adult Detention Center without bond.

Doucette said a bond agreement has been reached, however, and that he could be released as early as today under a $20,000 secured bond.

Adeniji-Bello is the husband of Dr. Margaret Adeniji, the former associate director of Johnson Health Services.

Doucette said it is believed that Adeniji-Bello could have a Ph.D., “but he’s no more a doctor than I am.”

Margaret Adeniji, who resigned from Johnson Health Services last year, could not be reached for comment.

Johnson Health Services Medical Director Dr. Peter Houck said Thursday afternoon that he was aware of the investigation of Adeniji-Bello, but refused further comment because of a long-standing relationship with the accused’s wife.

Police are asking for those who had a similar experience with Adeniji-Bello to call Virginia State Police Special Agent Jason Trent at (434) 352-8288 or Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office investigator Eugene Wingfield at 455-3779.
