Lynchburg City Schools will host a public meeting tonight to introduce the community to the new Sandusky Middle School.
Initial construction on the new building, which is expected to cost more than $28 million, will begin within weeks when a new football field and track are created. The venture represents the first new school for the city since Heritage High School was built in the mid-1970s.
Monday’s night’s meeting is open not only to those with children attending or set to attend the school, but also to community members who live in the surrounding area.
City school officials said the new building, which will be complete in 2010, should be a source of community-wide pride.
School board members and City Council have also been invited to attend. The meeting will include a presentation from Dominion Seven Architects, the firm contracted to handle the project. Representatives are expected to answer questions and present recently-released color renderings of the new facility.
Plans are for the new school to achieve leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) certification, which means a building must incorporate various energy-efficient components. Only 20 buildings in the state currently have the certification.
