Plans for a memorial garden honoring fallen Campbell County Deputy Jason Saunders will be unveiled today during the Board of Supervisors meeting at 1 p.m. in the county’s Haberer Building in Rustburg.
Saunders, 24, was killed during an early morning police chase nearly a year ago. He was a former 911 dispatcher and a volunteer for the Altavista Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
During the last year, the sheriff’s department sought donations to a memorial fund for the garden and held fundraisers, including an October car show and swap meet that featured Saunders’ mustang on display.
Preliminary plans for the garden call for a semi-circular monument and garden that will sit outside the sheriff’s offices in the Rustburg county complex.
The sheriff’s department says it has collected enough money for the project and the plans have been submitted to the public works department for approval. It needs approval from the board to build on
government property.
Also at the meeting:
w The board will discuss a draft of the county’s capital improvement plan and debt service schedule. If they choose, they may adopt a preliminary version of the plans that will be used when developing the county’s budget.
w A joint work session with the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission and the Campbell County Utilities and Services Authority will take place at 4 p.m. in the historic courthouse conference room. Among the issues on the
agenda are an overview of the county comprehensive planning process and an update on a sewer capacity study. Also on that agenda is a brief planning update from Boxley Materials Co. about a proposed quarry in Evington.
Board agendas contain more items than the ones listed above. To see the full agenda online, go to the county’s Web site, http://co.camp
