A Lynchburg police officer was injured after police say a driver assaulted him during a traffic stop Saturday night.

Jonathan Smith, 32, of Lynchburg was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a police officer, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute a controlled substance and reckless driving, said officer C.L. Deaner of the Lynchburg Police Department.

The injured officer, whose identity is not being made public, was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where he was treated and released with minor injuries, Deaner said.

The incident began at about 10:30 p.m. on McConville Road with a traffic stop to which three officers responded.

After speaking with the driver, Deaner said, the officers found probable cause to investigate for drugs and make an arrest. Smith resisted and assaulted two police officers, injuring one.
