Voltage problems are causing rolling power problems through the Lynchburg region tonight.

Appalachian Power estimates that about 1,000 customers do not have electricity, and others are experiencing power flickering off and on.

APCO spokesman Todd Burns says workers noticed an imbalance in the 138 kilovolt lines in the region earlier today, and suspect that is causing the voltage problems.  Burns says APCO has crews walking the power lines and at substations, trying to figure out what’s causing the imbalance.

WSLS has received viewer calls about “brown-out” like conditions, where the power goes on and off every few minutes.

Burns says the power problems are causing inaccurate power outage readings on APCO’s website.

As of 8:00 p.m., Appalachian Power’s website shows nearly 23,000 customers in Lynchburg, Amherst Co., Bedford Co., and Campbell Co, did not have power.

  • Campbell Co. – 8,542
  • Bedford Co. – 7,694
  • Lynchburg – 4,242
  • Amherst Co. – 2,717

Burns tells us the power outage reading on APCO’s website works by taking phone calls.  If a number of people in a particular street or area call in, Burns says the system assumes others in the area also do not have electricity.
