Lynchburg City Schools are being honored by the Virginia Board of Education for raising the achievement of economically disadvantaged students.
The only local school division recognized as a “Distinguished Title I School Division,” Lynchburg’s school division is among 13 statewide to achieve the distinction.
School systems were recognized based on state assessments during the 2006-2007 and 2006-2005 school years.
Districts recognized exceeded achievement objectives in reading and mathematics under the federal No Child Left Be-hind and met other criteria.
Additionally, 118 schools are being honored as “Title I Distinguished Schools,” including schools in the city of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson.
These schools maintained full state accreditation for two consecutive years, met No Child Left Behind objectives in reading and math and had average reading and math test scores in 60th percentile or higher.
