An Appomattox 16-year-old is dead after a vehicle driven by his brother crashed off the side of U.S. 460 in Campbell County on Saturday morning.

Sgt. David Cooper of the Virginia State Police said James Lee Holmes was the only passenger in the car driven by Charles Holmes, 18.

At about 6:20 a.m., the Chrysler P.T. Cruiser, traveling east, ran off the right side of U.S. 460, about a quarter of a mile west of Va. 24, near Concord.

The vehicle struck an embankment and struck a tree on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.

James was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Trooper P.A. Eckenrode’s investigation, Charles fell asleep at the wheel.

He was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
