A Huddleston woman was sentenced Friday to serve seven years in prison for a police pursuit last year that ended in the death of a Campbell County deputy.
Heather Lyn Bush, 27, had initially been charged with felony second-degree murder, but the charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement. Bush also pleaded guilty Friday to felony eluding police.
Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jason Lee Saunders, 24, died in the early morning hours of April 3 while trying to catch up with police officers chasing Bush’s vehicle on Johnson Mountain Road from the Altavista area into Bedford County, according to police reports and court records.
Virginia State Police reported that Saunders’ cruiser ran off the road near Orrix Creek Road and struck a tree along the roadway.
Saunders’ parents, Dale and Peggy, said Friday they were satisfied with Bush’s sentence.
