Neary 1,000 union workers at the Volvo Trucks plant in Pulaski County will lose thier jobs for good.
Volvo Trucks North America sent a letter to local UAW 2069, advising them that temporary layoff from May will become permanent. The action in May cost 973 workers a job, on what they and the company believed would be a temporary basis.
Volvo says because of its restructuring with its Mack truck unit, an operational unit at the Dublin plant will be lost. That operational unit includes 540 union workers. Volvo says those positions will be eliminated permanently. Volvo expects to close the unit between October 30th and November 13th.
The company says the loss of the Mack truck unit, and “other unforeseen business circumstances,“ including the downturn in the U.S. economy, impacted the planned recall of the 973 employees originally laid off in May.
