Drivers aren’t the only ones feeling the pain at the pump.Pulaski County Assistant Administrator Robert Hiss says high gas prices are also pushing the county budget over the edge. “The year we’re finishing up right now…we have gone over budget in our gas budget.“

Hiss says if prices don’t drop soon future budgets won’t get any better.“We just need to do the best we can to cut back where we can.“

That’s why a list was sent out to department heads giving several ways to cut back on fuel for county vehicles like remove unnecessary weight, coordinate trips to accomplish multiple purposes, use the most economic vehicle possible for the job at hand and telling employees to allow extra time for travel so they can drive at slower speeds.

The goal is to reduce fuel usage by 15% for the new fiscal year that starts Tuesday.

Hiss says the high gas prices pushed the county $125,000 over budget for the 07-08 fiscal year. He’s hoping the 15% goal will help make up some of that money and prevent it from happening again. “If we can institute some of the these changes and save money and save fuel that will save money for the taxpayers and also make us ahead of the game, if per chance, gas prices do go back down, we’ll be a much more efficient organization then we are right now.“
