In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, Craig County School Board members fired Superintendent Dr. Katherine “Kitty” Rodgers.
The decision comes close to two months after Rodgers was put on paid administrative leave. Rodgers arrived in the fall 2005, concerned parents have criticized the former superintendent for her leadership and handling of the school’s budget.
In Tuesday’s resolution, the school board cited “Sufficient cause” and “Breach of contract”.
According to school records, Rodgers failed to “perform the duties of superintendent….in a capable and proficient manner” and did not “enhance the quality of education in a cost-effective manner”.
In a separate resolution, Ron Gordon was appointed as interim superintendent until someone is hired or another interim superintendent is appointed. Gordon was Craig County’s High School principal and has been the acting superintendent since Rodgers was first put on administrative leave in March.
Chairman Jim Stephens says it’s a personnel matter and cannot comment and added the whole issue has “the potential to be under litigation”. As for the future of the school system, Stephens says Mr. Gordon is doing “an outstanding job and is making sure the school system moves forward and provides the educational services that are appropriate and I fully support his efforts.”
In the meantime, the school system remains under investigation by the Inspector General’s office with the U.S Department of Education. A special investigator paid the school board office a visit days after Rodgers’ was originally put on administrative leave after receiving complaints from parents concerned about the possible misuse of federal money.
The Department has yet to announce any findings in its investigation.
