Scary moments for a Carroll County couple, as a fire nearly torches their home.
According to the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Dewy Felts and his wife Louise left around 5:30 a.m. for Dewy’s check-up at the VA Hospital in Salem. When they got back, they noticed a lot of smoke near their home.
Louise thought someone is burning something, so they sped up.
When they got home, they found two out-buildings and about six acres were burning, and the back of their house had gotten so hot that the panels of siding were melting.
The Felts called 911, and both the Hillsville and Cana Volunteer Fire Depts. responded to the home on Chances Creek Road.
The Felts told firefighters that they burned some leaves and brush on Monday, put the fire out that day, and since it rained that night, they never thought the flames would rekindle.
Dewy told firefighters that he is thankful that he and his wife and neighbors are safe. Dewy added that he does not plan to burn brush again.
