Governor Kaine’s budget cuts will close the doors at the decades old Pulaski Correctional Center.
Locals in the Dublin area call it “Camp One.“
The closure could spell possible layoffs for 62 corrections officers and other staff.
A Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman said the 400-plus inmates currently housed in the facility will be moved to other prisons.
He said the department was still putting together a plan on how to help the 62 employees.
A couple of officer said off camera they learned of the pending budget cut a few hours before Governor Kaine’s announcement Thursday morning.
A corrections facility employing 20 people in Chatham will also be closed.
Governor Kaine’s plan calls for all closures to be final by January 5th.
