In an effort to preserve the historic Route 94 – J.P. Carrico Memorial truss bridge, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking written expressions of interest from individuals, organizations and government agencies interested in relocating, preserving and assuming ownership and responsibility for the bridge.

The bridge, which is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1927, is 912.8-feet in length and 27.4-feet in width.  The project to replace the bridge is scheduled to begin in 2010.

“Attempting to find a new home for a historic artifact takes on new meaning when the item is a bridge of this size,” Kalli Lucas, VDOT Bristol District Architectural Historian, said. “We are making every effort to get the word out about the opportunity.”

VDOT offers a one-time monetary incentive not to exceed the cost of demolition, which the Federal Highway Administration has set as $267,000.

Those interested have until 5 p.m. August 6 to contact VDOT and express interest in acquiring the bridge.  All interested parties will then be asked for proposals as to how the historic bridge will be used, preserved and maintained.  VDOT reserves the exclusive right to accept or reject any or all proposals.

Send all expressions of interest by 5 p.m. August 6 to:
