    Administrators, board members, students and
alumni representing “The Hokie Nation” that was left battered but
unbowed by a campus massacre accepted the 2008 Virginian of the
Year award from the Virginia Press Association on Friday night.
The press association commended “The Hokie Nation” for “its
rock-solid performance in the wake of great tragedy” last April
16, when a student killed 32 students and faculty members over a
span of more than two hours on campus and then committed suicide.
Larry Hincker, associate vice president for university
relations, told VPA members at their annual meeting that many at
Virginia Tech wondered whether they excelled in dealing with the
aftermath of the rampage “or whether we just coped.“
All eyes were on the university after the shootings, he said,
and many expected the school to be devastated. Instead, students,
alumni and staff joined together to grieve and support each other.
In addition, thousands of gifts and other expressions of sympathy
poured in from around the world.
“This is about a very large family that somehow found a way to
come together and support each other in the face of bottomless
sorrow,“ Hincker said.
The Virginian of the Year Award has been presented by VPA every
year since 1967.
