The man accused of attacking a woman at a local supermarket will undergo a mental evaluation.
In late January, Jeffrey Young was arrested for allegedly hitting a woman in the parking lot of Slaughter’s Supermarket in Floyd and then attacking her with a wooden club.
Young is charged with assault of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, and malicious wounding.
According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Short, Young plans to face the charges under an insanity defense.
He’s already had an evaluation with one of his experts.
On Tuesday, a judge approved Short’s motion to also have Young evaluated by the Commonwealth’s expert psychologist.
She hopes to have the results by September 2.
Young is also a suspect in the Roanoke County hit and run that killed local attorney Thomas Ferrell, but has not been charged.
