Virginia state police say a Pulaski County deputy responded to an assault call just before 5:30 Thursday afternoon. When he arrived police say the suspect assaulted the deputy with a knife and a blunt object and that’s when the deputy fired two rounds killing the man.
State Police are handling the investigation and they aren’t releasing the deputy’s name, but we do know he was not injured and he has been put on paid administrative leave until the out come of the investigation.
As for the shooting victim, a family member on the scene tells us his name is John “Harv” Collins. According to that family member and a neighbor Collins suffers from a mental illness and routinely takes medicines for a mood disorder.
State Police could not confirm any specific information on the victim, but they will hopefully release more information Friday.
