Preparing for the worst.  Law enforcement officers in Giles County spent their day training for a school shooting.

It took place at Giles High School in Pearisburg.

Officers from the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office also participated.

Every aspect of the training was as realistic as possible, except for the firearms.

Sheriff Morgan Millirons says the April 16 shootings have pushed everyone to get as much training as possible. “We want to train hard and we want to be prepared just in case a tragedy like that happens here.”

About 26 officers participated in today’s drill. The training coordinator says the biggest thing officers need to remember during an emergency is to communicate.

If you are in Giles County today, you may notice a lot of police activity.

That’s because the Sheriff’s office is holding a school shooting exercise at Giles High School.

It will last until 5:00 p.m.

The exercise is going on both in and outside the school
