Right now, you don’t hear a peep inside Lane Stadium
But on game day, with more than 66 thousand fans cheering and screaming, some believe it could break the sound barrier.
But if all those fans are on their best behavior, you won’t hear those infamous three little words.
“We can’t have that one back, let’s come up with some new stuff.“, says Ken Stanton.
Ken Stanton and Adam Kress are asking fans to come up with the next great football chant. You can submit your idea at hokiecheer.com.
“Some of the cheers we’ve gotten are ones people have been doing in the stands in small groups.“, says Stanton. “You know they’re funny, they’re interesting, they’ve motivational. But when you only get 30 or 40 people to do them, they’re not effective. To get all 66 thousand to do it would be a lot more effective.“
That many voices, in unison, no doubt easier said than done.
“How do you start it. How do you get it going? How do you let people know what to do, what to say?“, asks Adam Kress.
So how do you get a new cheer to catch on? Well they’re hoping if the athletic department picks a cheer they’ll show it on the big screen at games.
The athletic administration has told them, “We’re not going to promise anything, we’re not going to promise we’ll implement any kind of your cheers.“, says Kress.
Especially if those cheers don’t follow rule number one, remember Hokies Respect. The words and moves must be rated G.
“A lot of people tried to resubmit the stick it in cheer.“, says Stanton. “That didn’t work out so well.“
So keep it clean, don’t let your voice be benched.
There will be an awards ceremony the day of the Spring Game. The grand prize winner will be presented a signed football by Frank Beamer.
