A recent bridge inspection determined the need to lessen the weight limits for the Route 58 bridge located over Middle Fork Helton Creek between Volney and Whitetop in Grayson County.
As of today (Friday, July 25), the weight limits for the bridge are 8 tons for single unit vehicles, such as passenger vehicles, box trucks and school buses, and 12 tons for semi trucks. The former weight limits were 19 tons for single unit vehicles and 26 tons for semi trucks.
In the coming weeks, traffic over the bridge will be controlled by signals while repairs are made to the bridge beams. Once repairs are completed, the bridge should be strengthened to its original weight limits.
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes until repairs are made.
The bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2010 at a cost of approximately $776,000.
