State Police have a preliminary cause of a crash that killed three members of a Canadian family on Interstate 77 in Wythe County on Thursday, June 26th.
According to a preliminary investigation, officers think the 35 foot camper being towed by a Dodge Durango was heavier than the SUV. Investigators believed the camper fishtailed into the median, and dragged the SUV with it. Both the camper and SUV crossed into the other lanes, and hit a tractor trailer head-on.
State Police are still investigating.
The crash killed William Smith, his wife Sandra, and daughter Kaylee. Two other daughters in the SUV survived. State Police tell us they are going to live with grandparents in Florida.
The crash shut down one lane of I-77 in each direction.
