Most of the Virginia Tech students injured in last week's shooting rampage have been released from area hospitals.

Three patients remain hospitalized. Two are at Blacksburg's Montgomery Regional Hospital, and one is at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The patient at Carilion Roanoke remains in serious condition, according to Eric Earnhart, spokesman for Carilion Roanoke and New River Valley Medical Center in Montgomery County.

Those two facilities collectively treated six patients.

"All those [other] patients have been released," Earnhart said. "The last two were discharged [Sunday] from New River Valley. We still have one patient at Roanoke Memorial, and he's in serious condition."

Nancy May, spokeswoman for Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem and Montgomery Regional Hospital, said yesterday, "We still have one male and one female in [Montgomery Regional] hospital, and both are doing well."

All five patients who had been taken to Lewis Gale have been released.

Citing federal privacy laws, spokespeople for the hospitals declined to specifically identify patients being treated.

Initially, the four hospitals received a combined 28 patients.
