ROANOKE, Va. (WSLS 10) - Thousands of students in Roanoke City will head back to school Monday for the start of the RCPS+ Program. 

Officials say the enrichment program is offered to students in elementary school up to rising ninth graders. It uses unique learning experiences to engage kids over the summer months.

Many courses focus on STEM, as well as art and music. 

Last year, about 2300 students attended. This year, more than 3300 students are registered.

Superintendent Rita Bishop is excited about the growing enrollment. The district has tracked student outcomes and she says the program has led to better performance and better attendance.

About $1.8 million of tax payer money is being used for the program. Classes will run from June 15 to July 24.
