At a 9:30 AM news conference, The Virginia Tech Police Department said the shooter in Norris Hall was Cho Seung-Hui, 23. Cho was a South Korean Native, with a residence established in Centerville, Virginia. He was a senior English Major at Virginia Tech. Ballistics match one of the guns used in Norris Hall with the shootings in West Ambler Johnston. Police declined to speculate whether this meant Cho was responsible for the shootings at both scenes.
"At this time, the evidence does not conclusively identify Cho Seung-Hui as the gunman at both locations," said Col. W. Steven Flaherty, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police.

Investigators said that the chaos in Norris Hall had made identifying the victims difficult. Personal effects and IDs were strewn throughout the building as students fled from the gunman, barricaded themselves in rooms, or escaped the building. Officials said victims were found in 4 classrooms and one stairwell.
Classes at Virginia Tech are canceled for the remainder of the week to allow students to mourn and begin healing. Campus will reopen Wednesday for administrative operations.
Norris Hall has been closed for the remainder of the semester.
