Roanoke College shares a deep sense of shock and sadness at the tragedy that occurred this morning on the campus of our friends and colleagues at Virginia Tech. According to news sources, shootings in a residence hall and an academic building on the Virginia Tech campus took the lives of many people.
Words cannot express the shock and pain we feel. Roanoke has many connections to the Virginia Tech community-to former high school classmates, sons and daughters of our faculty and staff, colleagues, spouses, neighbors and friends. We extend our deepest condolences to them all and share in the pain and sorrow of our neighbors at Virginia Tech. We will keep the Virginia Tech community in our thoughts and prayers.
An interfaith memorial service that was planned for Holocaust Remembrance Day will be expanded to share our sorrow at the loss experienced today by our friends and neighbors at Virginia Tech. The service will take place Monday at 7 p.m. in Antrim Chapel. Following the service, counseling center staff will be available in the chapel to meet with students, faculty and staff.
We are keenly aware of the security needs of our own campus and the surrounding city of Salem. We realize that tragedies can happen at any time. As always, our campus safety staff is patrolling all residence halls and college facilities around the clock. We continue close collaboration with our neighbors from the Salem Police Department. Still, we are aware of the deep shock experienced by our own community, and we are committed to addressing the needs of our students
