As the sun fades on this day of remembrance, tiny flickering lights take it’s place. The flame is passed from one candle to 32 made of the same wax, one for each person lost.
“Daniel Perez Cueva”, reads the announcer. Daniel was Genevieve Jacobs’ roommate.
“I think he’d really feel honored.“, says Jacobs. “I think we feel really special that we’re honoring them and everyone’s here for the 32 people.“
The sky gets darker, the Drillfield gets lighter, much like the mood over the last year.
“After what’s happened you don’t wake up the same person.“, says Jacobs. “It’s going to be a new experience moving forward, learning from everything.“
The sound of taps plays. This day is done. Silence falls but candles and spirits rise. Hokies aren’t going to let this day end like that.“
Someone chants, “Let’s go!“ Then the crowd resonds, “Hokies!“
