Antonio Saunders, the inmate who escaped from a Danville Adult Detention Center work crew Tuesday morning, turned himself back in at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Saunders, 34, escaped from work detail on West Main Street.
“My understanding is that he has infant twins, and one of them had to have surgery today (Wednesday) in Roanoke,” Capt. C.K. Wiles said. “We knew that was an issue, and it may have factored into his decision to walk away.”
Wiles said it doesn’t excuse Saunders’ actions, but may explain why he did it.
“I’ve become familiar with him and I was shocked he walked away,” the captain said. “He’s obviously made a couple of mistakes, but he’s not a bad person.”
Wiles said it was unfortunate that Saunders would now face additional charges for the escape, because he believed that Saunders was at the detention center on minor charges.
“He may have just made things much worse for himself,” Wiles said.
