A fire damaged a home on Chaney Lane and displaced a family Sunday night.
There were no injuries but the blaze caused heavy fire and smoke damage to the top floor of the Cape Cod-style brick home at 209 Chaney Lane, according to David Bowles, deputy chief of the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department.
“The house is uninhabitable,” Bowles said Sunday night.
Gretna Fire received the call at about 7:25 p.m. from the homeowner, whom Bowles would not identify.
About 20 firefighters from departments in Gretna and Hurt, with three engines, a tanker and an ambulance, had the fire under control in about 18 minutes and spent more than an hour cleaning up and investigating, Bowles said.
Firefighters tried to use three nearby fire hydrants, but they were dead, Bowles said.
“The town had shut down the water and didn’t tell the fire department,” he said.
The three residents, all of whom are siblings, are staying with relatives, Bowles said.
The fire is under investigation.
