A fire scorches part of an old Hooker Furniture plant on Commonwealth Boulevard in Martinsville, just before noon.
Martinsville firefighters say a contract crew was working to take apart and remove equipment from the area of the facility formerly used to finish furniture. There are several spray booths in the area.
One of the contract workers used a grinder to file down bolts on a piece of equipment near the spray booths. Firefighters say sparks from the grinding ignited some of the residue that had built up in the spray booths.
Firefighters tell us the contract crew tried to put out the flames with fire extinguishers, then the building’s sprinkler system activated. The workers called firefighters, after realizing the fire was too large for them to handle.
Investigators say the building has only minimal damage.
