George Washington High School received a huge honor late last week when it came in third place in the prestigious Wachovia Cup competition.

Danville Public Schools Superintendent Sue Davis said GW has taken the coveted first-place prize in 2000, 2001 and 2003. George Washington competes in the AAA Division in the event sponsored by the Virginia High School League.

Schools are graded on eight academic and athletic categories and competed against some of the best high schools in the state, GW principal Chris Carter said Tuesday.

GW scored well in creative writing, scholastics, yearbook, newspaper and magazine.

The Danville school finished behind Princess Anne High School and Chantilly in Northern Virginia, according to results. GW was 20 points shy of taking second place from Princess Anne.

“George Washington High School has traditionally been a leader in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activity for many years,’ Davis said. “The Wachovia recognition is a benchmark of excellence. We are proud of the third place AAA ranking, and we are making plans to advance once again to the first place for the 2008-09 school year.”

Carter credited the hard work of GW’s teachers and students for the performance. The support of the Danville School Board and Davis goes a long way to encourage students and teachers to give their best effort, he added.

“This is a crowning moment to show some of our excellence …,” Carter said. “I am so grateful they continue to excel to the highest year in and year out.”

Other area schools also competed for the Wachovia Cup.

Franklin County High School finished 60th and Halifax County High School came in 74th in the AAA group.

Gretna finished 24th and Galileo Magnet finished 32nd for Group A schools.
