Jail escapee caught after chase in Chatham

DANVILLE - A man was in jail late Thursday after being chased through parts of Chatham after he escaped from the Pittsylvania County Jail. Larry Wayne Dodson was arrested without incident about 8 p.m., said Sheriff Mike Taylor.

Bloodhounds were brought in by the Halifax County Sheriff’s to track down Dodson. He was found hiding in an outbuilding behind a home on Lanier Street in Chatham, Taylor said law enforcement used the “Emergency Communications Network, “a telephone alert system concentrated in the specific search area. A total of 1,500 telephone calls went out to homes in the area letting homeowners know about the escape and providing a description of Dodson.

Law enforcement officers from Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Chatham Police Department, the Virginia State Police assisted in the search.

A Virginia State Police aviation unit kept Dodson on the move throughout his escape, Taylor said.

Dodson is charged with breaking and entering, grand larceny and felony escape and is being held without bond.

Taylor said Dodson is a person of interest on a variety of crimes in other jurisdictions. His first court appearance will be next week.
