CHATHAM — Pittsylvania County is now officially on its way to putting together a recreation advisory board and will soon be looking for a recreation director.

The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Monday night to establish the board. The recreation advisory board will include seven members with each representing a district in the county.

The advisory board will be in charge of recommending applicants for recreation director.

During the Legislative Committee meeting Monday afternoon, Staunton River Supervisor Marshall Ecker said he would like for the board to spend its first year taking an inventory of the county’s available recreation sites and how they can be used.

The decision came a little more than a month after a March 31 public hearing where about 100 residents packed the General District courtroom to oppose the county’s elimination of recreation funding from its then-proposed proposed budget. They also requested the county form a recreation advisory board.

Also Monday, supervisors voted to have County Administrator Dan Sleeper investigate ways to tear down the Blairs Community Center. The vote was later rescinded.
