Martinsville City Fire Marshal’s Office says a Sunday afternoon fire that destroyed an apartment was caused by a pot left on a hot stove.
The Fire Department says it happened at 511 Monroe Street. One unit of the apartment complex caught fire after a person accidentally left a stove-top burner on after they were done cooking. A pan containing grease, left on top of the hot burner caught fire, spreading to the cabinets and wall behind the stove.
No one was hurt.
The Departments says damages are around $20,000, but that figure could changes and the damage to the building is more closely examined.
An adult and two children are temporarily displaced, the Red Cross is helping them tonight.
