A $500 reward is being offered by the Danville Area Humane Society for help in finding the person who abused a year-old poodle.
Paulette Dean, executive director of the Humane Society, said animal control officers found the dog in the 200 block of Campbell Street chained to a porch.
“We are offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for cruelly treating a one-year-old female poodle mix,” she said Monday.
Animal control officers picked up the malnourished poodle with badly matted fur last week.
The poodle was checked out by staff from the animal shelter and was then taken to Brosville Animal Clinic.
“She has some raw spots on her, probably from the mats (in her fur),” Dean said.
Dr. Kay Geyer, one of the veterinarians at Brosville Animal Clinic, found a tightly bound rubber band on the dog’s back paw after the canine was examined and the hair mats were removed.
“She was matted to the point where she couldn’t see,” Geyer said. “Her hair was pitiful. I’ve never seen anything like it. That somebody would let a dog get that matted is awful.”
The veterinarian said it took hours to get the dog clipped down and remove the mats.
Dean said state law requires that stray animals are held five days before they can be adopted. She said the dog is now recovering at the shelter, and will be available for adoption at the end of the week.
“She’s real sweet. Not aggressive at all,” Geyer said.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call (434) 799-5306. All callers will remain anonymous.
