Officials say unattended cooking sparked a blaze that caused moderate damage to a structure at 200 Watson St. shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke on the first and second floors of the four-unit apartment building, according to a news release from the Danville Fire Department. Fire was extending from one of the lower units, where the kitchen was located, into one of the upper units.

It took crews more than 30 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Danville Assistant Fire Chief Steve Dishman said the first-floor occupant was helped out of the structure by neighbors.

Residents of two other units were not home at the time. One unit is unoccupied.

There were no injuries reported.

Dishman said four fire engines responded to the blaze and 21 personnel remained for nearly three hours to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.
