Former Sen. Phil Gramm steps down as John McCain’s campaign manager.
Gramm called the U.S. a “Nation of Whiners” referring to the complaints over the struggling economy.
However he says his controversial comments have hurt McCain’s ability to deal with the country’s problems.
Gramm also says he fears his words were misinterpreted, for he was referring to the nation’s leaders, not the nation’s people.
Barack Obama’s campaign says Gramm’s departure will make little difference to McCain’s economic policies.
