Will Virginia be a battleground in the 2008 election?
Will Virginia be a battleground in the 2008 election?

Should you buy into the current argument that Virginia be in play during this presidential election? Many Democrats are claiming that the Old Dominion is turning purple and will be a major battleground in 2008. They point to the Democrats victories for governor in 2001 and 2005 and Jim Webb’s surprising upset of Sen. George Allen in 2006. The Democrats also made significant gains in the 2007 General Assembly races, retaking control of the State Senate and picking up several House seats.

Bracket update… it’s not good.

I have about as much hope of winning this as Hillary Clinton does of winning the nomination… there’s a chance… but it’s slim!

Could a Virginian end up on the GOP or Dem ticket?

Over the past few weeks, more and more news sources have been speculating about the possible vice presidential picks for Sens. Clinton, Obama, and McCain. A lot of names have been floated, including at least five Virginians: former Gov. Mark Warner, Gov. Tim Kaine, Sen. Jim Webb, former Sen. George Allen, and retired General Anthony Zinni. In fact, Thursday NBC’s The Today Show ran a story throwing out some options for Senator Obama including Webb and Zinni.

Reading the same information and coming to different conclusions

It is interesting to see how people can look at the same set of facts and come to completely different conclusions. I had a blaring example of this last week.

Obama’s Veepstakes

Okay, it’s Barack Obama’s turn. Who do I think will be on his short list for VP? The key for Obama is finding someone who has a lengthy resume. He doesn’t need charisma or youth in a running mate. He needs foreign policy experience and gravitas. Being a Washington DC politician is less of a factor than for Hillary or McCain, but it’s hard to see a ticket of two senators being overly successful in a change election.
