(AP) - Authorities say as many as 200 people have been injured in possible tornadoes that swept through the Suffolk area today, and more were hurt in other parts of the state.
Tornadoes and severe storms cut a swath from Colonial Heights south of Richmond to southeastern Virginia.
A possible tornado touched down several times near downtown Suffolk, damaging Sentara Obici Hospital and at least 13 homes in nearby subdivisions. Dispatchers sent at least 20 ambulances to the scene.
“It sounds like we’ve got a major disaster going on right now,” Suffolk Emergency Management Coordinator Jim Judkins said. He said emergency workers were delayed by fallen trees that blocked roads.
Dana Woodson, a Suffolk City spokesperson, said one death that was reported was not related to the Tornado.
Authorities said callers later reported seeing a funnel cloud near Portsmouth.
About 16,000 Virginia Dominion Power customers were without service, mostly in the Northern Neck.
