As she prepares to run for statewide office, Secretary of Finance Jody Wagner has come under fire from the Republican Party of Virginia.
Jeff Frederick, the party chairman, called yesterday “Wagner Freedom Day” in honor of the departing secretary. Yesterday was Wagner’s last day on the job.
She is expected next week to announce plans to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination to run for lieutenant governor.
Frederick said Wagner “has consistently provided inaccurate and politically motivated revenue estimates that have put Virginia in the budget crisis we currently face.“
Delacey Skinner, Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s communications director, said “Jody Wagner’s fiscal stewardship in the Kaine administration has helped Virginia gain recognition as the best-managed state in the country, the best state to do business and a low tax-burden state with a solid triple-A bond raing.“
