Candice Nelson joined the WSLS team in July 2007. Born and raised in Martinsville, Candice grew up watching Channel Ten. She competed in speech competitions throughout elementary and middle school, as well as forensic competitions in high school. It was her enjoyment of public speaking that led her to seek news reporting as a possible career path.

She graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech in May 2007, where she was a part of the Virginia Tech News team. Through this experience, she won the Donald F. Morris Memorial Scholarship for excellence in student-run television. She was also a WSLS intern for three semesters.

Her other interests include baton twirling. She competed on the national level and was even the feature twirler at the Virginia Tech football games during her college career. She also enjoys reading books in all sorts of genres.
