Morva spoke to the court for the first time in the case, and drew a heated reaction from Derrick McFarland’s widow.

The jury that convicted William Morva recommended the death penalty over life in prison back in March. Morva is scheduled to be formally sentenced Monday morning.

Since it’s a death penalty case, the entire case including the trial phase will automatically be reviewed by the Virginia Supreme Court. 

Families of his victims and his own mother wept as the verdicts were read, but William Morva smiled slightly and snapped his fingers.

Defense team rested, after only calling the doctor who’s treated Morva since 2003 for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

After a lunch recess, Tamara Sutphin, the widow of Montgomery County Sheriff’s Corporal Eric Sutphin, took the stand for some emotional testimony.

Deputy Russell Quesenberry, the man investigators say Morva overpowered in a hospital bathroom, took the stand.

The 24 prospects were chosen after attorneys questioned nearly 40 people over two days in Washington County, where William Morva’s trial was moved when a jury could not be seated in Montgomery County.

Morva looks like he has not shaved in quite a while, as he sat in court while attorneys picked jurors.  Morva smiled and waved to the prospective jurors when he was introduced.
